Sound Seafood, located at 1137 W Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, is bound to become a local favorite. Equal parts sushi spot, seafood restaurant, and fish market, it caters to a wide range of tastes and preferences. From meticulously prepared sushi to perfectly fried whole belly clams and fresh-caught seafood prepared to order, Sound Seafood is fast becoming the go-to destination for quality seafood in the area.
Brought to the community by a local family, Sound Seafood fills a unique gap in the Larchmont/Mamaroneck dining landscape by offering high-quality, fresh options that are difficult to find elsewhere. With its focus on fresh, made-to-order dishes, the shop stands out for its commitment to quality over quantity. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch, premium ingredients for your next meal, or a casual dining experience, this establishment offers something for everyone.
For the owner Wayne Ivines Jr., the path to opening Sound Seafood has been a lifelong journey. “I started this thing when I was 12 years old, so I’ve been doing this going on 29 years,” he shared. Growing up on Long Island and working on fishing boats, Ivines developed a passion for seafood that has guided him throughout his life.
After years of commuting to Connecticut for work, Ivines decided it was time for a change. “My wife and I live right across the street, and she grew up here in Mamaroneck,” he explained. “We were just looking for something closer to home to be around the kids, and this has been a lifelong dream to open a store. This spot really spoke to us. It had everything I needed—coolers, cases, equipment in the back. It was almost like this place was made for me.”
While proximity to Mamaroneck High School wasn’t the deciding factor in choosing the location, it turned out to be a major advantage. “The high school kids have definitely been awesome for lunch,” Ivines said. Popular student offerings include sushi, flounder sandwiches, popcorn shrimp, and daily lunch specials catered to students such as a shrimp scampi linguini.
When it came to naming the shop, Ivines drew from personal history. “It came from the Long Island Sound, where I grew up,” he said. “It’s kind of funny because my father-in-law handled the LLC and DBA [Doing Business As] paperwork, and we tied the name into my kids’ initials, too. But Sound Seafood was always the original choice.”
The menu at Sound Seafood reflects Ivines’ dedication to freshness and quality. A standout is the lobster roll, featuring hand picked Maine lobster meat, butter-poached to perfection and served on a brioche roll from Isabella Vincent’s Bakery in Fairfield. “Our lobster rolls are definitely the biggest hit right now,” Ivines said. When asked about his preference between Connecticut-style (warm lobster with melted butter) or Maine-style (chilled lobster with mayo), Ivines said, “Nine out of ten of them go out hot, and that’s how I like them too.”
Other customer favorites include fish and chips, made with fresh Icelandic cod, and whole belly clams, a rare find in the area. “Nobody around here has them, all you can get are clam strips,” Ivines explained. “People who know the difference really appreciate it.”
Sushi lovers can enjoy a variety of crafted rolls prepared by their sushi chef, Berman. “This guy is great,” Ivines said, gesturing to his chef. “He trained professionally under other sushi chefs, and everything he makes is unbelievable.”
The menu also features grab-and-go options, such as grilled fish and vegetables, which change daily. “We’ll pick four types of fish and have them ready with sides like green beans or grilled vegetables,” Ivines explained. Additionally, customers can request any fish from the showcase to be cooked on-site at no extra charge. “If you want a whole branzino cooked, we’ll do it for you,” he added.
Sound Seafood is also one of the only fish stores in the area selling whole fish like tuna and swordfish, which they cut fresh in-house. Ivines prides himself on catering to everyone who steps through the door. “There’s nothing too small or too big a request,” he said. “If a customer orders a pound of catfish and we don’t have it, I’ll go to the market and get it for them.”
What sets Sound Seafood apart is its unwavering commitment to freshness. Each morning, Ivines drives to the Fulton Fish Market in Hunts Point, the largest seafood market in the U.S. “We go out there every morning at one o’clock and pick up the fish,” he said. “It’s a long day—I’m here until eight o’clock at night—but it’s worth it.”
This dedication to quality is reflected in every order. “When you order an oyster sandwich, we shuck the oysters right here and send them to the back to get fried,” Ivines said. “Everything is cooked to order and never frozen. If you order fish and chips, we get the cod right there and cook it while you wait.”
Although operating the shop has come naturally to Ivines after decades in the seafood business, opening the store wasn’t without challenges. “The hardest part was all the paperwork and town stuff before opening,” he admitted. “We’re still waiting on our sign permit, and it’s been like that since August.”
Despite these obstacles, the experience has been overwhelmingly positive. “The community has been awesome to me and my family,” Ivines said. “We’ve been getting great reviews on Nextdoor and Google, and the support has been incredible.”
To show their appreciation, Sound Seafood offered $20 lobster rolls during its first few weeks of business. “It was a way to give back to everyone who helped us out,” Ivines said.
Looking ahead, Ivines plans to keep the business small and personal. “I don’t need to become a big company,” he said. “I just want to provide for my family and have fun. I have fun here every day, cooking things up, trying new things, and just being in the kitchen—it’s like my stage.”
Future plans include expanding into catering services. “We’re going to start doing beach bakes and roll bars at people’s homes,” Ivines shared.
For first-time visitors, Ivines recommends trying their lobster roll, fish and chips, and whole belly clams. “But honestly, anything the customer wants, we’ll make it happen,” he said.
In just a short time, Sound Seafood has made a strong impression in Mamaroneck. From its fresh seafood to its personalized service, the shop offers a unique experience that’s rooted in quality and passion.
Whether you’re stopping by for lunch, picking up fresh fish for dinner, or ordering something special, Sound Seafood is a local gem that’s well worth a visit.
