Every year on December 31st, people across the country prepare for the New Year, celebrating with friends and families, attending elaborate events, and watching the iconic Times Square Ball Drop.
Despite the celebratory nature of the holiday, for many, New Year’s represents a fresh start and a time for self improvement.
Hence, many establish ‘New Year’s Resolutions,’ or goals for the year ahead. The Globe staff spoke to several MHS students and teachers to learn what habits or goals they hope to implement or achieve in 2025!
Nate Greven (’25) hopes that 2025 will be “a healthy and happy year.” Greven tries to frame his resolutions in a positive light and is dedicated to maintaining “grades…traveling, and going to the gym” in the next year.
Global History and AP European History teacher Peter Greene also focuses his resolutions on self improvement, noting the level or “personal dedication” needed for growth and reflection.
Cleo Ingalls (’27) has a different approach to resolutions–she views ‘New Year’s Resolution’ as an extended challenge. In the past, she has gone as far as to give up meat for the entire year. This year, she continues to set a high bar as she plans to run a half marathon.
While some, like Ingalls, find it empowering to establish ambitious goals in the New Year, for many, significant changes can feel overwhelming.
Those who struggle with change often establish small habits to remind them of their goals. Greven, for example, leaves Post-Its around his room and in frequently visited places.
Honors Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus teacher Anthony DeRosa employs a similar strategy, placing a sign stating “sugar” within a “crossed-out circle” in his kitchen.
DeRosa notes the value of resolutions stating that they “serve as a self-reflection mechanism that we can use to improve our lives, especially our health, and the start of a year symbolizes a fresh new start.”
It’s up to you to establish and determine the effectiveness of your goals. Regardless of the size of your ambition, start the New Year by setting meaningful goals that inspire growth and make the most of the fresh start a new year offers.
