Despite falling short in the Section 1 Class AA Championship, Mamaroneck Football had one of its most successful seasons in recent history. After a challenging start due to illness and injuries, the Tigers made an impressive playoff run, ultimately reaching the Section Finals
The season ended with a heartbreaking 17-14 loss to North Rockland on November 16th at Mahopac High School. Mamaroneck led by 11 points going into the fourth quarter, but North Rockland rallied with 14 unanswered points to claim the win. Though the loss was tough, it highlighted the team’s resilience and the leadership of Coach Vitti and his staff.
The Tigers finished the season with a 7-4 record, a reflection of their perseverance. Early on, the team faced significant setbacks, with seven key players sidelined by illness before their rivalry game against Scarsdale. Despite the loss to Scarsdale and further injuries to starters like Henry Norman, Kieran Jacobson, and Elijah Friedman, Mamaroneck bounced back with impressive wins against North Rockland and Carmel in Weeks 2 and 3.
Midseason injuries contributed to losses against Suffern and John Jay East Fishkill, but the Tigers responded in the playoffs. They avenged their regular-season loss to Suffern with a 35-20 victory, then defeated Scarsdale 17-14 in the Section Semi-Finals on a game-winning field goal by Will Prevost (’26). However, North Rockland triumphed in the Section Final, ending Mamaroneck’s playoff run.
Sophomore running back Mark Lebowitz reflected on the team’s resilience: “Every guy stepped up when they needed to, and our confidence never wavered. It really shows what a special group of guys we had this year.”
Mamaroneck’s 2024 season will be remembered for its determination and teamwork. Despite setbacks and injuries, the Tigers reached the Section Championship for the second time in school history, a remarkable achievement. While the championship loss was disappointing, the team’s strength and unity throughout the season inspired both the community and the players themselves. We look forward to their continued success next year.
