When you think of Mamaroneck High School’s sports teams, your mind might immediately go to football, basketball, or lacrosse. But tucked away in the mix is The MHS Ski Team, a dedicated group of athletes traveling to snowy mountains across the region. Despite being one of the most thrilling and unique teams at MHS, the ski team often flies under the radar.

One of the coolest aspects of the ski team is their weekly trip to the slopes. Throughout the winter season, team members leave school early, board a coach bus, and head to ski mountains like Thunderridge, Mohawk, and Mt. Snow.

Once they arrive at the mountain, the team gears up, putting on their signature Mamaroneck bibs (one-piece suits that extend up to your chest and have built-in suspenders), signalling to other teams that Mamaroneck is there and ready to win. The shared uniform also helps to build team spirit.

The team doesn’t have formal ski practices on the mountain, just intensive weight training in the fitness center. Every time they take a trip, they’re racing, which is the favorite aspect of being on the team for many, including Evan Schiron (‘26).

“There’s nothing like the rush of flying down the mountain with your team by your side. Every race is a mix of adrenaline and pure fun—we push each other to be better, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable,” states Schiron.

However, being on the ski team isn’t just about individual races. Unlike traditional team sports, skiing is a blend of individual performance and team effort, where each racer’s time contributes to the overall success of the team. However, winning isn’t the ultimate goal of the team.

Many members of the team don’t compete in other sports, and skiing is a way for them to get involved in school activities. While all competitors strive to win, being on the team is a way for skiers to enjoy themselves doing something they love.

Unfortunately, the ski team doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves at school. With no spectators on the mountains and competitions happening hours away off-site, it can be easy for the MHS community to overlook their achievements. Despite the lack of recognition, the ski team often boasts impressive accomplishments. In 2024, Hammy Hadden (a freshman at the time) was the top boys’ skier in Section 1, earning the coveted skimeister crown at the section championships for having the lowest combined GS and slalom time. He also took home fifth place in slalom at the New York State Tournament.

As the season progresses, the team hopes to draw more attention to their hard work and successes. While it may be difficult to go out and support the team in person, rest assured that the ski team has been making their presence known and representing the Tigers well on the slopes.
