Hidden travel gems that aren’t to be missed for your summer travels.
Cartagena, Annecy, and the Faroe Islands: The Best Vacation Destinations of 2025

As summer is quickly approaching, countless overworked people in need of a vacation are looking for the perfect getaway destination, a place to relax and enjoy– where their days can be spent in blissful idleness. Many of these people, however, start their thorough search using the most convenient resource possible: social media.

Social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have been brimming with vacation content, from the best restaurants in Rome to the best beaches in Jamaica. Although these places are each unique and beautiful, there are only so many times you can go to the same place or see the same advertisement for a touristy vacation spot on Instagram. There are so many places in the world that have been relatively untouched by tourists, yet they are just as– or even more– breathtaking and culturally unique. Here we will suggest exotic, vibrant, and eccentric vacation spots that have not been promoted extensively on social media.

First, Cartagena, Colombia is a perfect place to visit. Cartagena is a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Its main city consists of a walled area called Old Town, founded in the 16th century, with winding cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings. With a tropical climate, the city is also a great beach destination. Cartagena is also a short boat ride away from Isla de Barú, a tiny island made up of white-sand beaches and palm trees.

Colombia’s eclectic cuisine, made up of diverse and unique flavors tracing back to its indigenous, African and Spanish heritage, is unique and unbeatable. You can expect to find popular dishes such as citrusy ceviche, Arepa de Huevo (a flatbread made of ground maize), and Cazuela de Mariscos (seafood casserole).

Emma Post (’25) traveled to Colombia last year. She reflects on the trip as an amazing combination of a relaxing “beach vacation while surrounded by the gorgeous backdrop of Baru” while simultaneously “a trip filled with education as [she] learned about Cartagena’s rich history.”

Next, Annecy is an alpine town located in Southern France. Overlooking the French Alps, this city has a rich landscape, with rolling green hills and aquamarine lakes. Annecy is known as the “Venice of the Alps” due to the lake located in its central town, called Lake Annecy, in which you can take boat trips. This fairytale-like town also has rich history, as it dates back to the Medieval Times. When strolling through the main town, known as Vieille Ville (Old Town), houses are lined with overflowing flower boxes surrounded by clear lakes. From castles to sailing escapades, there is much to explore in this charming city.

Cycling is also very popular, with a bike path spanning 26 miles. If you and your family or friends want to experience an enjoyable form of exercise, regardless of your skill level, while also taking in the sights of the French countryside, you have found the right place.

Lastly, the Faroe Islands, a territory of Denmark, are known for their natural beauty and geographical uniqueness. Made up of 18 volcanic islands between Iceland and Norway, the breathtaking landmarks of this territory make it a must-see location. The land is made up of vast stretches of grassy plains, mountains and valleys, and one of the Faroe Islands’ most interesting characteristics are the unusual lakes situated atop the cliffs. This gives the islands a surreal look, almost as if they were computer generated.

The water at the surface of the elevated islands often form into waterfalls and cascade into the ocean below. Life on these islands is very peaceful and serene; the remoteness and utter beauty of the environment makes it a perfect getaway to detox.

Claire O’Neill (’26) traveled to these islands over spring break and her family was attracted to it because of the lack of tourists. She fondly remembers her trip to these Danish islands. “I loved it– it was quiet, natural, and not overrun with resorts or crowds.” She also remembers being able to “explore the island freely without any tourist traps,” which gives rise to unique and genuine vacation experiences.

It is true that popular tourist destinations can make incredible trips, yet the places  that are left largely undiscovered by society can lead to the most unforgettable experiences. The key differences in hidden gems are the sense of discovery, adventure and authenticity they hold, making them a worthwhile adventure for the upcoming summer vacation.
