Summer break is the perfect time to head to the theater with friends or family. Luckily for MHS students, this summer is sure to be action-packed with the release of the newest Marvel, DC, horror, and drama films as well as some classic re-releases. The Globe takes a closer look at some of the most anticipated releases and what students and teachers at MHS are most excited to see on the big screen.
Director James Gunn, best known for The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad, will be releasing the newest rendition of Superman on July 11, 2025. It will star David Corenswet as Superman. The film will follow Clark Kent’s (Superman) journey to reconcile his heritage from Krypton with his adoptive family in Smallville, Kansas.
Michael Perotta (’25) says he hopes the film pays tribute to the classic portrayal of Superman. “Those were one of the best portrayals of Superman on the big screen to date.” Perotta also added that he’s looking forward to a version that stays true to the comics.
MHS English teacher Mary Beth Jordan expressed that she is most excited for the new rom-com Materialists, directed by Celine Song, the Oscar-nominated director of Past Lives.
“I loved director Song’s Past Lives, a 2023 film about a love triangle of sorts,” Jordan states. Materialists will also explore a love triangle, starring Dakota Johnson as a Manhattan matchmaker caught between her flawed ex (Chris Evans) and a wealthy new client (Pedro Pascal). The movie is scheduled to release on June 13, 2025.
If you’re in the market for a Marvel superhero movie, this summer on July 25, Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released. Set in a retro-futuristic 1960s alternate universe, the movie follows heroes Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Girl, Human Torch, and The Thing, as they stop cosmic villain Galactus from devouring Earth.
Leo Paleokrassas (’28) has high expectations for this release, expressing how he is “a long-time Marvel fan and…really excited to see Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Vanessa Kirby’s chemistry as the famous characters.”
When asking Art of Film teacher Jennifer Spellman what she’s most looking forward to this summer, there was a clear trend in her selections. First, Jurassic World: Rebirth, which is the fourth installment of the Jurassic World series, continuing Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park trilogy. In this movie a team will be going back to the original Jurassic Park research facility with the objective of securing genetic material from dinosaurs that might provide life-saving benefits to humanity. “From all I have read, it reads like a love letter to Spielberg’s earlier work,” Spellman stated.
On a similar trend, Spellman will definitely be seeing the re- release of the classic Speilberg blockbuster Jaws. Originally released in 1975, this summer will be its 50th anniversary. Jaws follows a police chief, a marine biologist, and a shark hunter trying to prevent a man-eating great white shark from terrorizing the visitors of Amity Island. Jaws is considered by many publications as the first “summer blockbuster.” Not much is known about the contents of the re-release but Spellman hopes for “never-before-released scenes, interview footage with [Speilberg] himself, and tons of merch with our favorite mechanical shark, Bruce.”
If you want a classic high school comedy, Clueless will be re-releasing for its 30th anniversary on June 29, 2025. For a more artsy drama/comedy, director Wes Anderson will be releasing his newest movie on June 6 called The Phoenician Scheme. For horror, the third installment of the 28 Days Later series will be released on June 20.
No matter what type of movies you love, ranging from superheroes, drama, comedy, classics, or adventure, there will be something for you coming to theaters Summer 2025.
