History teacher Grant Edick has spent the majority of his career in the Mamaroneck School District at Hommocks Middle School. He is well known for his eighth grade social studies class and coaching the Mamaroneck High School junior varsity soccer team. This year, Mr. Edick has made the move from the Hommocks up to MHS to teach Global 9 and AP Government and Politics, along with taking on the role of head coach of the girls’ varsity soccer team.
At the Hommocks, Mr. Edick taught a course on American history that gave his students knowledge on the deep history of the country. Many were a big fan of his class and note that his teachings have left a lasting impact on their lives. Mr. Edick has found himself teaching many AP Gov students he also taught back at the Hommocks in their 8th grade year.
Jackie Mannix (‘26) is one of these students. “I enjoyed learning from Mr. Edick in 8th grade, and I’m so excited to spend another year with him as my teacher,” she said. “When I saw his name on my schedule I was so excited. I felt like he would make AP Gov a lot more enjoyable. I remember his class from 8th grade and it was always enticing and interesting. Being able to learn from him again in my final year of high school is such a gift.” Jackie is one of many who feel this way about Mr. Edick, showing how much of an impact he is having on students’ lives.
AP Government and Politics has been offered at the high school for 19 years. The class offers an in depth analysis of the politics in America and the policies and history that led to them. It has been Edick’s dream to teach this course, ever since he taught it while he was student teaching.
The class needs a teacher who knows how to talk about controversial subjects, and Mr. Edick is known for his policy of never sharing his own opinion. No matter who asks, he keeps his views to himself. He explains that the policy “started with my favorite professor that I still keep in touch with. She had the same policy, and I felt that by her doing that, we were able to engage in the content more fairly.” This is one of the many ways Mr. Edick succeeds in teaching history.
Not only has he been an impactful teacher, he is also an impactful coach. Maddie Cashman (‘27), a member of the varsity soccer team, expresses how “Having Mr. Edick as a coach has been so amazing. He puts so much time and effort into the team and you can tell he really cares about all of us and wants us all to succeed. He has a lot of knowledge about the game that he has been able to share with us.” Mr. Edick is bringing that same passion for teaching to the high school, where he is stepping into new roles.
The two positions, teaching and coaching, go hand in hand for Mr. Edick. They both help him be successful in different ways. He explains how “being a coach is the same thing as being a teacher. I often go back and forth between the lens I use. When I am teaching I often view the situation through an athletic lens. Then when coaching, I sometimes use my teaching lens with people work.” By playing both roles, Mr. Edick has been able to improve and grow as a teacher and a coach and use what he’s learned to better his classes and team.
Mr. Edick’s move to the high school is not only exciting for him, but also for all the students and athletes that now get to learn from him every day. Whether it’s in the classroom or on the soccer field, his advice, dedication and intelligence allows him to connect with students and leave a lasting impact on their life. This is just the first year of many during which Mr. Edick will be able to foster the MHS community.
