As the seasons change, many of us find comfort in getting together with friends and family to watch a favorite show. One teen favorite is My Life with the Walter Boys. Debuting in 2023, the show immediately became a hit for teens everywhere, including teens in Mamaroneck.
My Life with the Walter Boys revolves around a teen girl named Jackie who, following the loss of her family in a terrible accident, moves from New York City to rural Colorado to live with her mother’s best friend, Katherine Walter, and her ten children, nine of which are boys. The show gained instant popularity, primarily for its plotline revolving around a love triangle between Jackie and two of the Walter boys, Cole and Alex.
After a long awaited two years, the second season of the beloved show has finally been released. Initially, there was a lot of excitement around the new season because fans were hopeful to finally see the relationship between Jackie and Cole blossom after it had been teased throughout season one. Erin Secker Walker (’29) remarks, “I was so excited to watch this season because I thought there would be a lot of new plot additions and I was excited for Jackie to be with Cole.” Unfortunately, and to the disappointment of many fans, not much happened between Jackie and Cole this season. In fact, few of the anticipated plot developments happened at all.
Instead of focusing more on the dramatic love triangle between Jackie and the two brothers or the budding relationship between Jackie and Cole, the directors decided to focus more on smaller plotlines that viewers did not seem to be as interested in. A big part of this season was spent focusing on the family’s efforts to save Walter’s ranch from closing down. However, many pointed out that what made this season so underwhelming was the fact that most of the screen time focused on the arguments between Katherine’s husband and their eldest son Will.
Instead of moving ahead with Cole as season one’s cliff hanger implied, Jackie started a relationship with Cole’s brother Alex again, only to admit her feelings for Cole in the very last episode, almost exactly mirroring what happened in the first season, and making fans feel unsatisfied with the lack of plot development this season. According to Christina Mason (’27), “I felt like it was almost just a repeat of what happened in season one.”
Although My Life with the Walter Boys may no longer be a Mamaroneck favorite, there is still a third season to look forward to, and hopefully the new season will bring the plot development people hoped to see this season.
