Now that the summer is starting to fade away, it’s time to reflect on the new music this season has brought us. Summer songs can serve as inspiring anthems, infusing the sunny months with extra doses of light, and the summer of 2025 was full of new memorable ones.
This summer, the most listened to song on Spotify was “Ordinary” by Alex Warren , which he wrote as a sweet love song to his wife. It’s a whimsical song to make any summer moment a little more dreamy.
“Ordinary” was closely followed by “Shake It To The Max (FLY) – Remix” by MOLIY, Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea. This song is definitely more party-like, and makes for a uniquely fun listening experience. After that came “Love Me Not” by Ravyn Lenae, a soft and upbeat song, perfect for a mellow summer day.
In fourth place came “Manchild” by Sabrina Carpenter. She had a summer of glory in 2024, and the release of her single Manchild revealed that Carpenter still has a multitude of lively summer songs in her, full of sarcasm and irony.
Last on Spotify’s list was “back to friends” by sombr. A more serious song, “back to friends” embodies all the bittersweet emotions of summer.
Putting aside Spotify’s top tracks, Mamaroneck High School students were doing their own listening this summer. Ari Reynolds (’28) said that her summer song was “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls, having listened to it often with her friends at camp. Zelda Rosen (’28) listened to “Manchild” and “Man’s Best Friend” by Sabrina Carpenter because they “remind her of summer,” with their cheerful rhythms and spirited melodies.
Sarina Lee (‘29) listened to “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” by Paul McCartney, as it is fresh and exhilarating. She describes the song as “completely unhinged in a fantastic way,” a perfect tune for wild summer days. At the same time, she mentioned how “the song has so many juxtaposing themes and ideas” that leave her reflecting each time she listens to it. The song is also appropriate for the calmer days of summer.
Zoe Prins (’28) said that she listened to Wallows all summer, one of her favorite songs of theirs being “Calling After Me.” She “listened to them on repeat” throughout the summer because their songs just have an undeniable “summer vibe.”
Lila Pacenta’s (‘28) summer album was “Cleopatra” by the Lumineers. It helped her “stay in the head space of summer.” Pacenta noted that it “reminds her of camp,” being mysterious and woodsy with rustic guitar playing, perfect for a summer in the woods.
Overall, this summer had some great songs, and as we ease into the fall months it’s time to shift away from some of the brighter anthems that defined our summer and into some cozier music.
