Who’s the school’s biggest sports fan? Here’s a hint: You can see them at every single game out on Memorial Field; some say they practically live for the games. High up in the sky, atop the field lights, lies a huge bird nest home to a family of ospreys. Ospreys are large birds of prey known for their hunting technique of diving feet-first into the ocean to catch fish. Ospreys look for a location right next to or near water. Mamaroneck High School is right by the water, a perfect location for ospreys to build a nest.
Like most birds, ospreys go south for the winter. However, when they come back north, they return to the same nest as the year before with the same mate. Ospreys are very territorial and protective of their nests, and often nests can be used for decades, being passed down to new generations of offspring. The nests are never rebuilt; rather, the osprey adds to them over time, making them larger and more sturdy.
The ospreys play a huge part in our community. They are a source of entertainment, and people look forward to seeing them. I interviewed Celia Terranova and Arden Demasi, two players on the girls Mamaroneck High School JV soccer team and asked them their thoughts on the ospreys. Celia Terranova responded by saying how she loved watching the birds throughout her practice, and it added excitement. Arden Demasi agreed and explained how the birds were always so fun to watch. Whether sitting in the stands or playing on the field, many find the Ospreys nothing short of amazing as they always put a smile on people’s faces.
