Senior Traditions

How senior traditions create lasting memories for the graduates.
Senior Traditions

At MHS, there are many senior traditions that help bring people together. These traditions include Battle of the Classes, where seniors, specifically, bring a lot of spirit and energy, and the Senior Show, where many seniors participated in High School Musical 2, in order to be a part of the experience of performing with their grade. Additionally, in one of the last weeks of school for seniors, there is a senior spirit week where students show their pride for MHS before leaving for their internships. All of these traditions, and many more, help to contribute to the seniors’ fun memories of their last year at high school.

Two of the most significant events at Mamaroneck High School are Battle of the Classes and the pep rallies. These events bring all grades together, encouraging everyone to participate, and particularly add excitement to senior year as they signify the end of their time at MHS. For Battle of the Classes, all grades partake in a series of team games to win points, and ultimately the team that has garnered the most wins the battle. This year the seniors took home another win, letting their school spirit shine for every point they gained.

Another event that occurs toward the end of every sports season are the pep rallies. During the pep rallies, all varsity teams showcase the dance they choreographed, competing for first, second, and third place. The final pep rally of the year occurred on April 24, marking the last pep rally these seniors will experience with Mamaroneck High School.

Alex Grigorescu (‘26) said, “I felt that the spring pep rally was the most exciting event in senior year. It was the seniors’ last major school-wide event, and the combination of competition and teamwork brought the grade closer together.” These pep rallies allowed students to come together, supporting each other and engaging in the school spirit, as the seniors are nearing the end of their high school career. Events like these create perfect memories from senior year, ones filled with school spirit, unity, and celebration.

While the seniors find joy and community in senior traditions, the juniors and underclassmen can appreciate the bonding as an inspiring part of high school. Juniors, especially, are excited for their opportunity to participate in these activities. Junior Maya Joseph (‘27), said, “I’m most excited for senior spirit week because the themes are always fun, and a lot of people get involved in them.”  Senior spirit week is a tradition where each day of the chosen week consists of a theme. For example, one theme this year was “anything but a backpack day.” On this day, students brought items like wagons, carts, drawers, containers, and more items to carry their books and school supplies that would normally go in their backpacks. Other themes this year included dress like a kindergartener day, dress like Adam Sandler day, wear your college decision T-shirt day, and show your American pride day. These traditions add to the senior experience through community bonding and inclusion, and juniors and underclassmen are excited to take part in the future.

Senior traditions give the class of 2026 a chance to come together and celebrate before going their separate ways. For underclassmen, these events are something to look forward to – a reminder that the best parts of senior year are still ahead.
