Like those before them, the Class of 2026 values resilience, individuality, and self-reliance.
Forging Their Own Paths: How the Class of 2026 Reflects a Legacy of Independence

Released this April, the biographical film Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, captures the legacy of cultural icon Michael Jackson, highlighting both his artistic works and lasting influence on global culture.

As we say goodbye to the Class of 2026, it is important to remember them in a similarly positive light, recognizing the growth, resilience, and independence they have developed throughout their high school journey.

Since many seniors are moving on to prepare and find their own voice, Kaylyn Barnett (’26) commented that she “plans to go into a workforce gaining vocational skills and finding your passion for things you love such as technology and meeting new people.” She aspires to be independent, reflecting self-discovery, ambition, and personal growth. Like MJ’s lifelong self-reliance, Barnett’s determination to pursue her own path demonstrates the independent spirit that defines much of the Class of 2026.

The Class of 2026 also reflects this independence through growing responsibility. As expectations increased, students relied on discipline, time management, and perseverance, learning to take ownership of their successes and failures.

MJ’s influence extended far beyond music. His work shaped cultural expression and inspired countless people to embrace confidence, creativity and self-belief which was beautifully portrayed in the movie, including Gabby Robb O’Hagan (’26) who commented as a big fan Jackson’s music, “It really proves that he is a generational talent and sort of a once in a lifetime artist that we will never really get to see anyone like him again.” In music, his ability to transform personal emotion and universal expression made his legacy one that continues to resonate across generations.

Like MJ, who shaped culture through his presence and passion, seniors are shaping their own environments through their actions, relationships, and growth. Whether through leadership, kindness, resilience, or perseverance, each student contributes to a larger legacy that continues even after graduation. This connects directly to the question many seniors may reflect on: when people look back on your time in high school, what impact do you hope you are leaving behind?.

The Class of 2026 represents more than just a graduating class; it also represents a generation of individuals learning how to define themselves and create their own paths forward. Through personal growth, students have demonstrated the same independent spirit associated with MJ’s legacy. Although every student’s story is unique, many share the common experience of overcoming challenges and discovering strength within themselves throughout high school. As the Class of 2026 moves into the next stage of life, they carry with them the lessons developed during these years. continue the enduring legacy of courage and self-reliance that his life represents.
