Knicks: How Far Can They Go?

The Knicks, in their third playoffs in a row, aim to take home their first finals victory in half a century
Knicks: How Far Can They Go?

In the midst of the playoff season, basketball talk is everywhere. With the New York Knicks back in the spotlight, this excitement is easy to see at Mamaroneck High School.

Between fans wearing gear and conversations throughout the halls, MHS has been a hub of support for the Knicks. “I love the playoff season,” said Charles King (’29). “I’ve been watching since I was little, so to see the Knicks in this position is amazing.”

Although it is important to many, some maintain indifference to this monumental point in the year. “I don’t care that much about the NBA, but it’s still cool that a New York team is doing well,” said Oscar Kapadia (’29).

Last year showed how strong the Knicks can be. Entering the playoffs as a third seed, they were expected to do well from the start. These hopes were heightened after they powered through a strong defensive team in the Detroit Pistons with a 4-2 victory.

Following that, they faced off against their second-seeded historic rivals, the Celtics. The Celtics were widely considered the favorites. However, after star player Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles injury, the Knicks advanced to face the Pacers for a chance to play in the NBA Finals.

With fans extremely excited to see their team have a real chance to win the conference title for the first time in several decades, energy in New York and the surrounding areas ran high. However, the Knicks couldn’t make it past the Pacers and suffered a crushing 4-2 defeat.

“They were great with the Pistons, and with the Celtics, but I hate the Pacers. We were just overpowered,” said Eli Moskowitz (’29). MHS students seem to understand how difficult it is to win an NBA title, but most are confident it will happen.

Many blamed the Knicks’ failure on a lack of focus and understanding of the stakes. As a result, a meeting was called in Tarrytown, a nearby town in the middle of the series. There, Knicks forward P.J. Tucker tried to resolve many of the disputes among the Knicks, along with encouraging them to give their best performances going forward. What followed was one of the best Game 6’s the Knicks had ever seen. With a crushing 38-point win, the Knicks had achieved the largest playoff margin in franchise history. However, when these issues resurfaced, they gave up their 14-point lead with a few minutes to go and fell to the Pacers.

The Knicks have responded with several changes in staffing and playing. First, they decided to fire head coach Tom Thibodeau and replace him with Mike Brown. They also made the decision to reduce the amount of time that point guard Jalen Brunson had the ball. In addition, under Mike Brown, the team has increased its three-point shooting.

As a result of all of this, the Knicks have done better this year compared to last year, boasting a better record so far. This momentum continued in their recent playoff victory against the Philadelphia 76ers, where the Knicks secured a 108-102 win and further strengthened fans’ confidence in the team’s championship potential. The question still remains: are these changes enough to carry the Knicks to their first finals victory in over half a century? MHS students will certainly be watching closely.
