MHS D1 Athlete Profiles

Brandon Burrell (‘26) began playing basketball in 3rd grade, and the rest is history. His first memory of playing basketball was on the playground with his friends at Murray Avenue School. He truly fell in love with the sport when he started playing on organized teams, and he immediately knew it was his passion. By seventh grade, Burrell had quit all of his other sports to focus on basketball. As a Tiger, he blossomed into a star, becoming Mamaroneck High School’s all-time leading basketball scorer. His favorite memory of his basketball career is winning Mamaroneck’s first-ever section championship this winter. Throughout his journey, the piece of advice that resonated most with Burrell came from head coach Tyrone Carver. Coach Carver taught him that “the comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.” Next year, Burrell will be playing Division I basketball at Harvard University, where he plans to study economics. He is excited to compete with the best of the best and to travel the world playing basketball. We send him our best!

Maya Hennessey (‘26) has been running like the wind since she was seven years old. She started track with her first club team, Tailwind Track Club, where she learned to love the discipline and persistence that the sport came with. Her first memory of running track was her first workout, which she was barely able to finish. Hennessey remembers wanting to quit right then and there, but she pushed through, just like track always forces you to do. Her favorite part of her track career came this past indoor season, when she broke previous personal records. Beyond the competition, Hennessey credits running with teaching her valuable life lessons, especially the importance of looking at the bigger picture rather than dwelling on a single race. Next year, Hennessey is excited to run Division I track and cross country at Loyola University Maryland. We wish her the best as she begins this exciting new chapter!

Will Plunkett (‘26) has been a standout baseball player ever since he first picked up a bat. He started playing baseball when he was five years old, and he fell in love with the sport because it never felt like a chore. His first baseball memory came in first grade at Murray Avenue School when he hit a home run so far that it hit his spectating grandfather. As he progressed through his baseball journey, Plunkett has always appreciated the countless relationships built through baseball. His favorite memory of this journey came during the 2025 Section Semifinal against Scarsdale. After losing to the Raiders earlier in the season, it felt especially rewarding to help lead the Tigers to a dominant 16-2 victory. This spring, Plunkett also played a key role in leading Mamaroneck to a Section One victory. Throughout his baseball career, Plunkett has gained recognition from colleges and professional teams across the country. Next year, Plunkett plans to attend Binghamton University, where he is excited to compete for high-level conference championships. We wish him good luck!
